The first book in the delicious new Emergency Dessert Squad Mystery series from national bestselling author Laura Bradford.

With her rent rising faster than her pie crust, bakery owner Winnie Johnson had hoped to be rescued by an inheritance from her wealthy friend and neighbor Gertrude Redenbacher. Instead all she inherits is the widow’s hostile hissing tabby, Lovey, and a vintage ambulance, restored by Gertrude’s late husband. As her dream crumbles, Winnie makes her final delivery—a peach pie to an elderly widower. But she finds Bart Wagner lying on his kitchen floor, smothered by a pillow.

To comfort her frightened and grieving neighbors, Winnie comes to the rescue with her baked goods—and an idea is born: dessert delivery via her ambulance and a new business called the Emergency Dessert Squad. When she’s not speeding to the scenes of dessert emergencies, Winnie is also racing to track down Bart’s killer—before she needs to call a real ambulance for the next victim…

Here is what I thought

Such a fun start to a new series!

Winnie is upset because she is going to have to close down her bakery because the owner of the building raised the rent and she can’t afford it. She was hoping when she heard that she was in the will of her elderly friend that maybe she was going to get a little money that could help her keep her building, instead she inherited a cat that hates her and a old ambulance.

When Winnie decides to make some sweets for an old friends who were sad and frightened about their friend being killed she had a great idea. She would use the ambulance and make sweets for dessert emergencies, if your sad, mad, happy, etc. Her friends loved the idea and it’s off to a great start, but she just needs to find out what happened to her friend who was killed.

Winnie is a great character and she gets along a lot better with the older crowd than those her own age and has a lot of elderly friends. They also look out for her and are fun neighbors. She is cautious and so I am curious how her relationship will go with a man whose daughter is not happy about things.

With so many foodie cozies out there I really thought that the Emergency Dessert Squad was a very inventive way to make a bakery and it also had a really good mystery. Though I figured it out it wasn’t that much ahead of the MC so that makes it a good one!

If you’re a cozy fan and love foodie themes then you need to try this one!

The Narrator

  1. By the way, at the end of the story, the young lady becomes a teacher at a school in Walsall, which is where I lived for most of my life so far.😀
